8/9/10 Leaving the country

Giddy with the freedom of having a car and unsure if our feet/knees could take another round of hiking, we headed off for an international adventure. We decided to head to Italy to see the Matterhorn, which they call Cerviono.

The drive over to Italy was through small mountain villages and over pretty passes and was quite enjoyable. Then we inadvertently ended up on the toll way in Italy, which was quite an adventure. We also had to try three times to get petrol, the third of which involved speaking Italian (HA! is all I have to say about that) to the station attendant, gambling on the correct pump (which do we want: 'ordinaire', 'sans plomb' or 'gasolini'??) and finally parting with our newly obtained (and precious- who-knows-when-another-ATM-will-give in-and-hand-over-more-cash!) euros after the credit card wouldn't work.

We managed to make it to the base of the mountain, a town called Brevil-Cerviniato, at which point the beautiful sunny day promptly clouded over. After much time wasting, we did manage to get a peek at the peak. Stupidly, we expected it to look like the pictures you see, which must all be taken from Switzerland. DOH! We had a lively debate about whether we did in fact have the correct peak in view and then threw in the towel and headed home.
