31/8/10 Lac Blanc in Reserve Naturelle Des Aiguilles, France

On Tuesday, we got up at the butt crack of dawn and headed back to le Praz for another go. The weather was gorgeous and we took the telepherique up to the chalet, dumped most of our stuff and, wanting to keep our agenda in line with European norms, we promptly stopped for coffees at the cafe on the mountain.

All caffeinated up, we headed north for a day hike to Lac Blanc, which is a whitish alpine lake surrounded by fantastic peaks. It was beautiful but crowded with lots and lots of tourists. We had a picnic lunch above the lake and then continued along a circuit back to the chalet. The hillside we hiked along looks over the Chamonix valley and across to Mout Blanc. The views are some of the most breathtaking I've ever seen. Glaciers in all the high valleys and we even managed to spot several chamois (which looked like large mountain goats to me), some with babies.

Back at the chalet, we ordered a “jug” of wine (which all other western cultures would call a glass), which gave us each a large shot-sized gulp of wine and was all we could afford, and then headed in for dinner. We had a cold fish and rice salad to start, followed by a massively cheesy potato dish, followed by four different types of cheeses on a plate, followed by dessert (incredibly, one of the dessert offerings was more cheese!). I can't ever remember eating so much cheese in one sitting. I don't even like cheese that much but the cheese here is good and so is the bread. Mmmm, baguettes!
