Banff National Park - Skoki Backpack Trip, Merlin Meadows and Hidden Lake

comedians

Castilleja Lake (from near Merlin Lake)

Day three of our backpack, we hiked from Baker Lake to Merlin Meadows (5.1 mi) and camped in the CG about 0.5 miles from the Skoki Lodge.  This lodge was originally a backcountry ski lodge but also takes guests in the summer.  If you want a nice overnight with no heavy pack, book the lodge.  We gather it fills up fast but from what I could tell, it would be a great place to stay (and no need for a tent!).  When we swung by to check it out, the host had just baked an assortment of fresh pastries, which made us drool.  Sadly, not for us so we pushed on to the lovely CG, which was our favorite on the circuit.  From there we hiked up the valley to Merlin Lake, so named because the water from the lake disappears into the rock before reappearing down the cliff a way.

Hike from Merlin Meadows to Hidden Lake CG

On day four, we headed from Merlin Meadows to Hidden Lake CG (5.2 mi) and snagged the last spot in a very squeezed and crowded campground.  Hidden Lake is about a half hour hike up the valley from the CG and was beautiful.  That night was not the best.  It poured, a gagging and puking guy in the tent 2 feet from ours kept us up most of the night and a porcupine tried to break into our tent and to eat Jeff's boots.  Day five we booked it back to the car and headed to Jasper for some much needed showering and beer!
