Glacier Perito Moreno, Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
We took a bus from Torres del Paine National Park over to the Argentinian town of El Calafate, the closest jumping off point for getting to Los Glaciares National Park. Los Glaciares has two main areas: the southern portion, which contains Glacier Perito Moreno, and the northern portion, which contains a number of impressive granite peaks (including Cerro Fitz Roy). Glacier Perito Moreno (shown as Gl. Moreno toward the bottom left of the map above) is another glacier that flows from the Southern Patagonian Ice Sheet. What makes is so neat is that you can get really close to the 240ft high face of the glacier (wikipedia tells me that if you include the underwater bit it's 560ft) and watch it calve off into the lake. After numerous people who got too close were killed by falling ice, the park put in a bunch of boardwalks and viewing platforms, which make it a really easy place hang for a day if you dress warmly enough.
