To cut out some of the driving and try something new, we took a car ferry from Brjanslackur (on the southwest side of the Westfjords) to Stykkisholmer, on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. From there, we drove to Grundarfjordur and camped in an old volcanic crater. The scenery was stunning but the weather was pretty windy and rainy and cold. Yuck.

Snaefellsjokull is the dominant feature on the peninsula and is one of the most famous sites in Iceland, primarily due to the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne. In the book, the protagonists find the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth on Snaefellsjokull. We were lucky to catch a peak of the top one. It was shrouded in cloud the rest of the time.
