Skaftafell National Park is "Iceland's favorite natural wonder". What we saw of it was pretty stunning. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating and our big hike mostly involved wandering through dense fog and rain. The few vistas we got were worth the hike though. At one point in the park, you can walk on the nose of a glacier. This location came with numerous warnings about all the ways you may meet an untimely death if you don't hire a guide. We ignored the warnings and headed up but not very far. As far as I can tell, all the guides do is give you crampons and walk in front of you for about 10 minutes, helping you avoid the obvious small crevasses. Sometimes it pays to ignore the warnings and just use common sense.
