17 and 18/8/10 Ko Samui, Thailand

Sorry about the random mismatch of pictures in this entry. My computer battery is dying and I can't get the pictures and words to cooperate with me. More below...

After Ko Lanta, we decided that we'd better get out and see some more of the country. So, we decided to head to the east coast, where the weather is better this time of year and where the snorkeling and diving are meant to be great.

I don't know about other countries but the people of Thailand can make what should be a 15 minute bus ride stretch out into hours. We had to go no more than 250km and it took us 10 hours. No we didn't get lost. Well at least I don't think we did. It's hard to tell given the erratic way they drive in these parts. Unexplained U turns are the norm and we did plenty during our trip. This might have been amusing if our “VIP” air conditioned bus actually had air conditioning and if we hadn't had to change buses (note that we were in the charter bus system and NOT the public bus system. I shiver to think about the public buses....) no less than 5 times. Four of the times we just boarded a bus to get driven around in circles for 15 minutes, dropped off just down the road from where we started and made to wait until the actual bus to our destination arrived (usually predicted to arrive in 30 minutes but actually arriving in 2 hours).

Anyway, painful transport aside, we made it. Our stopping point was Ko Samui, which is a party island and not really our thing. However, Ko Samui is the jumping off point for the Ang Thong Marine National Park, which we really wanted to see. Turns out you couldn't see much under water due to very low visibility, but the islands in the park were pretty stunning. We were so inspired that we spent a few VERY sweaty hours hiking up to various view points, where we checked out the “Emerald Sea” on Ko Mae Ko, which is a green inland saltwater lake and got a view of the entire park from the top of Ko Wua Talap.
