St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park, Placencia and Bananas

From San Ignacio, we migrated down to Placencia, a beach town on the southern coast.  On the way, we stopped at St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park for a swim.  The blue hole is pretty enough but very developed and it was pretty busy when we were there too.  Worth a cool down stop though.

Placencia has a nice, relaxed vibe and we enjoyed our time there.  Unfortunately, this was our first experience at the coast and we were hoping for blue, tropical water to swim in but that's not what the beach is Belize is like.  The beaches are mostly covered in seaweed (sometimes a foot deep) and the water has thick seagrass growing in it.  To add to that, there's a fair amount of garbage around so even if you were to brave the sea grass, I'd be worried about what I might step on hidden in the grass.  Not much swimming happened, unfortunately.

Learning about bananas.

We did manage to ride bikes provided by our awesome Air B&B and to use the inflatable kayaks they provided to explore the coast.  Since there's not a ton to do in Placencia, we also ventured north a bit to check out Bunches of Fun banana plantation, which produces mostly Cavendish variety bananas (the ones we get in the store).  We got a tour and some fried banana chips and enjoyed it, despite the excessive sweating it involved.  There are tons of varieties of bananas, with different flavors.  Who knew?

We also made a stop in at Dangriga, which I would recommend skipping all together. Just in case you are reading this to scope out a trip to Belize...
Apparently no one reads the signs...
