Lanin Volcano, Lanin National Park, Argentina

View to the west from the
shoulder of Lanin.
From Villa Pehuenia, we headed south to Lanin National Park. This park is huge (412,000 hectares) and has it all - volcanoes, cool trees, lakes and waterfalls.

We set up camp on in a deserted camp ground on the shore of Lago Paimun.  It was gloriously quiet after all the busy places we'd camped.  The camp hosts even provided us with a wood fired hot water shower.  Luxury.

We hiked to a lovely little lookout near the ranger station on the north side of the volcano and then drove around to the south side and hiked up to the southern shoulder of the volcano.  This hike was fantastic and included large numbers of Monkey Puzzle trees and some killer views.  After hiking, we headed out to some natural, undeveloped hot springs near Lago Epulafquen.  There are developed springs out there but if you drive a bit further and are willing to hike for a couple of miles, you can get to some natural springs, which we had all to ourselves in the rain.
