12/10/10 Rome, Italy

Rome. Wow! What an amazing place. I know this is obvious but it far surpassed our expectations. Stupidly, we tried to cram everything we could into a day and a bit. I think we missed most of it but we did manage to see the Coloseum and a good deal of Vatican City.

We were hoping to get a glimpse of the big guy himself (or at least maybe the Popemobile) but no luck. We did get to see lots of Swiss guards, dressed like court jesters, guarding pretty much everything.

The art was amazing and the Sistine Chapel was all it's cracked up to be, even with 800 pushing and showing Italians and almost as many guards shusshing the crowd. What was particularly interesting to me was how much art from other places has been comandeered by the Catholic church. There were lots of great sculptures and the church has descreetly issued each male with a fig leaf.

After Vatican City, we checked out some of the ruins. They are still finding things to this day, which is mind boggling. There are so many ancient artefacts around that the tops of ornate columns were just hanging out along the street and being used as benches!
