| Bleached dead trees on the tarn shelf walk are lovely. |

One of my favorite things to do in the fall in Tasmania (besides covet the last of the sun and warmth) is to go to the mountains to see the Nothofagus (or fagus as most here call it) turn colors. It is just stunning and can turn entire hillsides brilliant shades of red. I miss my fall colors in Michigan and, besides a maple here or there in the Botanical Gardens of Hobart, this is the closest I can get.
The tarn shelf walk in Mount Field National Park is a gorgeous 12km (7.5mi) walk that takes 5-7 hours depending on how much you dawdle. It's pretty much always beautiful but the weather can be rough. We picked a cracker of a day for a stroll!
