Goat Mountain

Lunch at the summit

Walking along the ridge.
Sometimes it's more fun
to wrestle than pose...
On a rare weekend when we were all off work and actually around, we decided to climb Goat Mountain with Devin and Harms.  The peak is just north of the Going to the Sun Road, in the eastern central portion of the park.  The trail leaves from the Sunrift Gorge Trailhead and initially heads toward Siyeh Pass.  A couple of miles along the trail, there is an unmarked trail that splits off to the right and heads up the the mountain.  You can't see the summit for most of the climb (all 4000ft of it!) and much of it is scree but if you just keep pluggin' upward, you get there eventually. Of course, the views from the top are amazing.  We must have spent two hours dawdling around up there.  A side trip along the ridge toward St. Mary's lake is well worth the effort as bright blue Goat Lake becomes visible below the cliffs that run along the southern flank of the mountain.

Jeff, right on the edge.  Eeek!
