From the internet (not mine) but a cool view of the
pressure ridges around Scott Base. |

| Melt pond, pressure ridges and Mt. Erebus |

Scott Base, a lovely little green cluster of buildings about 2km from McMurdo, has just the right geographical setup to produce pressure ridges in the ice each spring. I stole the picture to the right to show what they look like - crumpling of the ice into wavy ridges due to compression forces and the ice bending around the point. The ridges can be really beautiful and each season, the US and Kiwis survey the scene, mark any danger spots and then let us wander through the seascape. This season the ridges were pretty small but getting out of town to see something new is always high on my priority list so Jeff and I took part of our precious day off to go check them out.
