Wanaka

Lake Pukaki (it really is that blue!)

Wanaka is one of my favorite places on the south island. There's a cute little town, a nice camp ground and enough hiking to fill a lifetime!  Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki are on the way to Wanaka and are both worth a stop.  Lake Pukaki sits at the base of Mount Cook and is the most amazing blue color from all the fine glacial sediment that's in the water.  While I was in Wanaka, I hiked up Rocky Mountain for a lovely view of Lake Wanaka and headed to Mt. Aspiring National Park and hiked to the Rob Roy Glacier lookout, which was just knock your socks off stunning.
