South Coast (between Bodrum and Antalya), Turkey

Lycian cliff tombs from 4th century.
After our boat trip, Jeff and I parted ways with the others, rented a car and headed east to Antalya via Mamaris, Fethiye and Olympos.
Dreaming of a fixer upper.

An entire town of Greek people that were moved en mass back to Greece during
tense times between Greece and Turkey.  The town is now empty.

Asian weirdness in the amphitheater.

Sarcophagi

Ruins at Olympus.
So all of the above was cool but the Yanartaş (aka flaming rocks) was crazy.  This is a place where gas escaping from rocks spontaneously ignites and has been burning continuously for the last 2500+ years.  It is said to be the inspiration for the myth of the Chimera (a monstrous fire-breathing creature that is part lion, serpent and goat).  As geologists, this just blew our mind and we spent a lot of time debating just what was going on there.
